When starting work on a new project, how do you quickly determine other projects you have done in the vicinity? The firms I worked with used to record that data on paper tax maps using colored highlighters or sticky notes.
It is a pretty tedious and manual process but it is quite valuable in that accessing older project information provides numerous benefits when starting work on newer projects. This information could be simple items like benchmarks and/or contact names. It could also be more complex information like competitive project bidders and construction metrics.
Whatever the information is, it can definitely provide value to the next project. The key is how hard is it to find?
In today’s installment, we will explore a better way to organize and locate this information. In this new strategy we will export Civil 3D geometry as a KML file and then leverage it in Google Earth. In doing so, we can quickly identify projects done in the vicinity of a simple address.
