There are several ways to move Civil 3D content into InfraWorks, some of which include: LandXML, .IMX, .SHP, .SDF, .FBX, or you can even create a connection to a native Civil 3D drawing. Typically, the method you choose depends on the data being moved. Sometimes though, you may be working with data that doesn’t lend itself well to any of the available options.
For example, let’s assume you have a DWG containing 3D wireframe geometry and you need to leverage this content in an InfraWorks model. (This is a scenario I was presented with recently.)
Since this was such an interesting challenge, I decided to record the workflow such that I could share it with others. Even though you may not work with wireframe geometry on a regular basis, this workflow provides a great opportunity to focus on some of the powerful solid modeling tools available in AutoCAD and Civil 3D!
