After creating a proposed site model in Civil 3D, you may wonder if it’s possible to push your design into InfraWorks to create compelling visualizations for a public meeting. In today’s post, we’ll explore a couple “old school” techniques to transfer a proposed parking lot design from Civil 3D to InfraWorks.
Generally speaking, the workflow involves extracting "assets" from the Civil 3D model that can be leveraged in an InfraWorks environment. We’ll start by exporting the proposed grading to LandXML. Next, we’ll take advantage of the MAPEXPORT command to convert the boundaries of various materials, (grass, pavement, concrete, etc.) into SHP files that will serve as coverage areas. In the future, as the Civil 3D design changes, the affected surfaces/SHP’s can be swapped out to update the InfraWorks visualizations.
